Circular economy and digital transformation: where do we stand today?

In a context where economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability are becoming strategic priorities, digital transformation is emerging as a key catalyst for the adoption of the circular economy within Canadian businesses. This convergence between technology and sustainability not only offers opportunities to optimize resources but also strengthens the resilience of supply chains while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Digital transformation and the circular economy in Canada

The transition to a circular economy in Canada involves integrating sustainability principles into supply chains and adopting digital strategies to improve resource efficiency. Shifting from a linear economy to a circular economy is essential to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and enhancing the country's economic resilience. In 2024, initiatives such as advanced plastic recycling in Alberta and the creation of circular food systems in Ontario demonstrate how digital technology can support these transitions.

Many companies have chosen to reduce their carbon footprint, using tools such as EnergyCap, optimizing their energy use.

Impact of circular practices on emissions

Canada has recognized that 70% of global GHG emissions come from the extraction and use of resources. Adopting a circular economy could significantly reduce indirect (Scope 3) emissions related to the manufacturing, transportation, and end-of-life of products.

This transition is vital if we are to achieve our goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Recent reports indicate that several provinces, including Quebec and British Columbia, are leading the implementation of circular economy strategies. At the national level, standards are being developed to harmonize circular practices, which could boost interprovincial and international trade by ensuring that all stakeholders adhere to the same specifications.
